Economic Community of West African States ( Ecowas) says it was surprised by reports that the military junta plans to prosecute ousted President Mohamed Bazoum for high treason.

Ecowas has condemned the move saying it represents yet another form of provocation.

Niger was plunged into political crisis after the removal of Bazoum from power.

The regional bloc has also not ruled out the possibility of using military intervention to reinstate the ousted leader in West Africa.

Ecowas plans to charge Bazoum contradicts the reported willingness of the military authorities in Niger to
constitutional order.

It says Bazoum remains the democratically elected leader.

West African leaders have condemned his illegal detention and calls for his immediate release and reinstatement.

The United Nations has also reiterated its message saying any attempt by Niger’s Junta to bring charges of high treason against Bazoum is very worrying.
