Economist unpacks corruption in public and private sectors

Political economist Israel Mkhize says people tend to focus more on the public sectors’ mistakes or corruption than those of the private sector, based on the flawed argument that the public sector is mostly affected because taxpayers’ money is being wasted.

This comes as governance seems to be at the core of South Africa’s shaking public and private institutions.

According to corporate governance code, board members are appointed to apply acceptable standards of doing business. Directors are appointed on the grounds of their knowledge and experience.

Mkhize stresses that there should be an equal exposé of corruption in these sectors.
