Economic transformation a key issue

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Delegates who attended the opening address delivered by President Jacob Zuma at the African National Congress’ (ANC) policy conference want to see the advancement of economic transformation for the people in the country, while others want the discussions to be an open debate on the future of the party and the country.

Only designated delegates were allowed to comment on the opening address to avoid conflict of opinion.

Lawrence Mavundla the president of Nafcoc says: “The ANC is really taking shape in looking at the issues of economic development and the gap that exists between the poor and the people who are rich. As business people we are encouraged.”

The address was an indication of what will happen in the next few days, Thabo Monyona the deputy chairperson of the Free State ANC stated that the issues of robust debate are underlined.

Even though the issue of economic development was on most of the people’s lips, it was agreed that there has to be means of how to deliver it.

“I think that we will deliver on government’s promises and I think that we will definitely be looking into the role of provinces, their powers and their functions and the role of municipalities in this regard, their powers and functions, we need to give them more powers to be able to deliver on services,” Monyona concluded. – By Busisiwe Radebe
