A 43-year-old woman from Ugie in the Eastern Cape has accused the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) of negligence. This after, she unsuccessfully tried for more than a year to register her three children in order to receive child support grants.
Weziwe Linisa last received SASSA grants in 2013 as a result of a faulty Identity Document and she says, since then, putting food on the table has been a daily struggle.
She says she has been sent from pillar to post after applying for a new identity document so that she can apply for child support. Her new ID document arrived over two years ago and she re-applied in June 2019 for child support grants.
Linisa says she has been trying for more than a year to get the problem corrected.
“Sometimes I go around looking for work and I can’t find any. I’m forced to go to the neighbours to ask for food. I send my children to school everyday so that they can access school nutrition even though they are supposed to take turns going to school.”
