Reading Time: 2 minutes

Three more people have been brutally killed at Ekuphumleni township in Ngcobo in the Eastern Cape. Police say two unidentified suspects stormed into a family home and shot the unsuspecting family, killing its two members and a neighbour.

Two other members of the family, that include a toddler, were rushed to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. It is alleged that 15 people were killed last week for suspected stock theft, gangsterism and dealing in drugs.

Engcobo Municipal Mayor Siyabulela Zangqa says they are concerned about the recent killings.

“It’s becoming an issue that is worrying us as the municipality because it affects our young people and is also resulting in many people losing their lives. Some people that have been killed at Masonwabenathi were not even part of these groupings, the other one was just walking on the street and the other one is alleged to have been sleeping and a child of three years shot there. So it also affects people who are not directly involved in these dealings.”

Eastern Cape police spokesperson Thembinkosi Kinana says two suspects have been arrested in connection with the recent murders.

“Four suspects are said to have entered these homesteads and shot six people of whom three people died while others were rushed to hospital for medical treatment. Among those who are in hospital is a three-year-old boy. The motive for the killing is being investigated, two suspects have been arrested. One firearm has been confiscated, our investigation continues.”
