Eastern Cape rural learners offered online education during lockdown

Reading Time: 2 minutes
Plans are afoot to offer online education to all matriculants in the rural parts of the Eastern Cape during the lockdown period.
MTN has partnered with the provincial Education Department to distribute 72 000 sim cards loaded with data to Grade 12 learners.
The company has also handed over the state of the art equipment which includes cameras and white boards that will be used to support the 13-broadcasting studios to be used to conduct the virtual learning classes.
However as the province gears up to support matriculants to catch up on the lost academic time, access to network coverage remains a challenge.

MTN General business manager, Magatho Mello says they’re working round the clock.

“The sim cards will be given to the Provincial Department of Education which will distribute to learners. As MTN we believe that everyone deserves a benefit of a modern connected life hence, we have invested over R50-billion in the past five years in our network infrastructure and we are currently extending our network footprint to reach all remote areas such as Williovake villages.”
