Eastern Cape Health MEC, Sindiswa Gomba, has lauded medical personnel in the province for their work in the fight against the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The province has seen an upward trajectory in the number of patients who have recovered from the virus. There are now more than 250 recoveries.

To date the province has registered 774 confirmed cases of the virus. Gomba says most of these patients are in self-isolation.

“Part of it, the majority are members of the Correctional Services. As you know a mass was tested and many people were actually positive. Buffalo City is topping of those people who are now negative and back to community followed of course by Port Elizabeth followed immediately Chris Hani.”

Stamp of Approval

In April, the Eastern Cape’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic was given the stamp of approval by Minister of Health, Dr. Zweli Mkhize, despite the steep rise in the number of infections in the province.

This after earlier in that month concerns were raised on how the Eastern Cape was dealing with the rapid rise of COVID-19 cases.

During a visit to the province, the Minister of Health lambasted officials for their slow progress in tracing those who came into contact with mourners who attended a funeral at KwaDwesi, Port Elizabeth, three weeks ago.
