The Eastern Cape MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Fezeka Nkomonye and the Deputy Minister for Sport Nocawe Mafu have paid a visit to the bereaved families of the three Netball players and the administrator who died in the bus crash on Sunday.
They were en route to the national netball championships in Cape Town when tragedy struck.
The victims are Nocamagu Mbunyiswa, a coach and three players Phelo Charles, Thabisile Maxikixa and Indiphile Mfengu.
Mafu says a provincial memorial service will be held.

“We are looking at probably having that memorial service by Monday or Tuesday next week to allow all sports lovers and everybody else in the province to be part of mourning the lives we have lost,” says Mafu.

Netball South Africa President Cecilia Molokwane on the accident:

Coach Nomawethu Diko says their deaths came as a big shock.

“As the OR Tambo team, we haven’t played in five years because of a lack of resources. Now, we were going to nationals to showcase the potential that we have. In the past five years, we have been training for this moment. The players are hurt and disappointed that they couldn’t make it to the field. We are deeply hurt by their passing. There was nothing that we could have done to save those players,” says Diko.
