The Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC) in the Eastern Cape is going to honour one of South Africa’s most decorated footballers Daine Klate.

The Port Elizabeth-born former Chippa United, Bidvest Wits, Orlando Pirates and SuperSport United midfielder, who retired from playing football earlier this week, is set to be honoured when DSRAC hosts the Eastern Cape Sport Achiever’s Awards in two months’ time.

Klate from Gelvandale in Port Elizabeth has since been appointed as Chilli Boyz reserve team coach. Listen below to DSRAC spokesperson Andile Nduna:

Nduna says they are both excited and sad with the 34-year-old Klate’s retirement from playing football.

They are excited because Klate held the Eastern Cape flag high in his playing career winning six Absa Premiership titles with Matsatsantsa a Pitori (three), Pirates (two) and Wits.

And they are sad because Klate is retiring when they thought he could contribute more to the Chilli Boyz on the field.

Meanwhile, Nduna added that it is great that Klate, who played 13 times for Bafana Bafana, will impart his football knowledge to up-and-coming footballers going forward. – Report by Monwabisi Jimlongo
