Eastern Cape government partners with malls to facilitate COVID-19 vaccinations

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Eastern Cape government is working around the clock to vaccinate more people. The province has taken a step to vaccinate people even on weekends, partnering with malls to facilitate their vaccine drive – which they say has proved to be effective.

Eastern Cape department of health MEC, Nomakhosazana Meth, says government had to be creative in their efforts.

“We are very excited to see firstly the turnout which shows that our people have responded to our call. We had to be creative and innovative when we looked at the numbers of the new infections that are rising by the day, hospitalisation that are rising and also deaths that are occurring in our communities and also noticing that men are not coming out to vaccinate. So we had to think out of the box and say ok, can we meet them halfway, reach out and try to make this thing cooler and more convenient,” says Meth.

Meanwhile, the convenience has encouraged some shoppers who were hesitating to take the jab. Lynn Struvig is one of them.

“I think it is wonderful that they have the drive-through vaccine. I was not going to have it done, but I lost my best friend on Monday and almost my husband to COVID so the right thing to do is to get the jab,” says Struvig.
