A group of Devon residents on the East Rand of Gauteng received RDP title deeds on Saturday.

77-year-old Lettie Kodisang is one of them: “I lived in the shack for five years. It was leaking. We were vulnerable to cold every winter. I am grateful,” she said.

However, those who are still on the waiting list are running out of patience.

The area has a history of violent protests  related to  housing delivery.

“We are hurt, and these protests won’t stop until we get our houses,” said one resident.

“They say the developer will be on site on the 14th of May, but we will wait and see. If it doesn’t happen we will go back to the strike,” said another resident.

Gauteng Province is inundated with house-seekers.

“We estimate that backlog as 540 000 houses throughout the province and the backlog, as I say, it’s the function of the province which is on the move all the time. The more houses are delivered the more people move into our province,” said Gauteng Premier, David Makhura.
