E-tolls roll into 2015

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Though the Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance (Outa) and main opposition parties in South Africa says the e-tolling system on Gauteng’s freeways has failed, it still hasn’t been scrapped as suggested.

A survey of road users revealed that 80 % found the e-toll administration service “very poor”, according to the SA Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Sacci) .

After just over a year of the system’s introduction, millions of motorists continue to resist registering for e-tolls tags and the South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) is still not making enough money to maintain the roads as planned.

Motorists who have registered for e-toll tags claim that Sanral has been billing them incorrectly.

Though taxis were said to be exempted from the system, taxi associations have complained that Sanral has been billing them for using tolled roads.

South Africans can expect to see the Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance (Outa), the general public, taxi associations and political parties continue to resist eTolls in 2015.
