Eastern Cape police have launched a manhunt after four armed men allegedly injured two people while they were robbing a cash-in-transit van in Mthatha.

Police say a 75-year-old woman was struck by a bullet in the arm and a 70-year-old man was hit in the head during an exchange of fire between the alleged robbers and G4S security guards.

The 70-year-old has been rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

The four armed suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount.

“It is alleged the security guard were at the door at FNB at Yorke Road in Umtata whereby they were delivering some cash to the bank.  They were accosted by four unknown men. Two were armed with pistols and they demanded the container be taken to their car,” says police spokesperson Dineo Koena.
