E Cape community presented with development plan

Last month, community members torched several government buildings and municipal graders demanding service delivery.

Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Zweli Mkhize has presented the community of Keiskammahoek in the Eastern Cape with an ambitious plan for development.

Mkhize made the comment in response to violent protests that hit the area over the past two months.

Last month, community members torched several government buildings and municipal graders demanding service delivery.

Government has agreed to upgrade local roads, refurbish the local schools and rebuild the hospital.

Mkhize says the plan will be discussed with President Cyril Ramaphosa.

He says, “There will be attention given to the main gravel road which I think the complaint was about from Stutterheim to Keiskamahoek that initially there is going to be an immediate regravelling of this road so that it is easy to use and the department of transport, municipality working with other stakeholders to develop a long term plan to tar the road.

“Obviously there are a number of other issues, the issue of the Vukile Tshwete school will be constructed, but there are no challenges, [however] the local hospital will be a challenge, that we will be discussing with national minister,” adds Mkhize.
