The Eastern Cape House of Traditional Leaders says it’s aiming for a death-free initiation this summer season.

CEO of the House Traditional Leaders Mzwethemba Nkantsu says they have beefed up traditional forums throughout the province and trained traditional nurses to deal with all challenges facing initiates.

The province has recorded the lowest number of initiate deaths in decade’s during the past winter initiation season.

Eleven initiates were reported to have died compared with 24 that died during the same period last year.

Nkantsu says parents should not allow under aged children to go to initiation school.

“The responsibility of ensuring the safety of the initiates rest with the parents, every boy who is under 18 years that person does not qualify to be circumcised even if there is one month short. Any traditional surgeon that will circumcise under aged boys will face the might of law. We will deal with that person, we have already secured some arrests in the province of about 40 traditional surgeons some of them have already been sentenced,” says Nkantsu.
