Durban July racing event attracts thousands

Fashion, fun and excitement are the order of the day at the Vodacom Durban July. Thousands of high profile celebrities are gracing the Africa’s biggest horse racing event.

This year’s Vodacom July theme is “It is time…”

Punters and horse lovers are waiting with bated breath for the winning horse in the main race.

The favourite is African Night Sky. People are still streaming inside the venue.

A sea of colorful fabrics. Fashionistas battle it out to woo judges and the crowd.
Under the theme “It is Time” designers pulled out all stops…

“We using old stuff with the new stuff and creating endless brands; and we are fabulous,” says one designer.

This year’s theme It’s Time… is all about Afro-futurism. It’s all about where we’re going. What is the future for fashion? Fashion is very tightly driven, so it is time to be perfect, explains another.

And revellers interpreted the theme in many different ways.

“To me the theme It is Time… means it’s time to go back to our roots. We must stop adapting other people’s cultures. We must stay original.”

“It’s time for the ladies to wear pants for either evening or for casual. Wear pant with a tie… so it’s not basically about suits.”

For many, it was one more tick from their bucket list. .

And for those betting on the race, African Night Sky and White River are two of the favourites for winning the race.

Meanwhile Ethekwini municipality’s Phillip Sithole says the event has lived up to expectations as crowds flock to enjoy good music, food and fun.

Over 50 000 people are expected to attend the prestigious Vodacom Durban July.

Durban Metro Police spokesperson Parboo Sewpersad says they have already towed away some vehicles that have been parked illegally overnight to secure parking space for the event.

Sewpersad says there will be roadblocks around Durban in anticipation of the after-parties in the city.
