Durban comes alive with Africa month celebrations

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Africa month celebrations added brilliant colour to Durban on Saturday and unity was the buzz word. People drummed in the message of unity with a street parade, loud and lively.

People came from near and far showing off Africa’s diverse cultures through music, poetry and dance.

“Unity means we have to socialise. Unity means we have to be together for building our continent. Unity means we have to share our culture. Unity means we have to know Africans are one,” says Rwandan, Ildephonse Habyalimana.

“This is a wonderful thing because what we are showing is that all South Africans must come together and be as one and as we see here in this function there are a lot of people, different people from different walks of life which means unity and that is what we need as South Africans,” says South African, Sanny Chetty.

The event was organised by the Department of Arts and Culture as well as non-governmental organisations.

“It reminds us of our identity as Africans that we are having one common destiny in this continent and we need to make sure that it develops,” says Department of Arts and Culture’s Vusi Mkhize.

Celebrations are aimed at re-energising the spirit of African unity.
