DRC’s Jean-Pierre Bemba awaits his fate

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Former vice-president and rebel leader in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Jean-Pierre Bemba, could soon be going home.

That is if judges at the International Criminal Court rule in his favour.

Bemba will hear on Wednesday whether he will return to jail or go home, after overturning his war crimes conviction on appeal.

He was found guilty in 2016 of crimes committed in neighbouring Central African Republic in 2002 and 2003  and has spent the last 10 years in prison in The Hague.

He was accused of failing to stop his rebels from killing and raping people – but a judge last month said that he cannot be held responsible for their actions.
