Jazz legend Dorothy Masuka is to be laid to rest on Sunday at Westpark Cemetery in Johannesburg. Masuka died last Saturday at the age of 83 after complications related to hypertension.

She also suffered a mild stroke last year. Masuka was born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, and her family moved to SA when she was 12.

Her passing has been described as a great loss to the country and the music industry.  Her funeral will be held at the University of Johannesburg’s Soweto Campus from 9am until 1pm.

Masuka’s grand-daughter, Laconquer, says her grandmother inspired her to be a strong person.

“Her strength inspired me to be a strong woman, she had pushed me into taking the artistic route myself. She taught me a lot about insecurities and self-love. I appreciate her for that until this day. It breaks my heart that it’s my own family. It’s hard to loose someone that you love, the only thing you know.”
