Dolphins captain Maharaj called up by Proteas ahead of Titans clash

Reading Time: 2 minutes

In-form Dolphins captain Keshav Maharaj has been called up to the Proteas squad for their upcoming three-match One-Day International Series against Australia starting at the weekend.

South Africa’s first-choice Test spinner has been the star player in the domestic Momentum One-Day Cup where he is the leading wicket-taker and has also impressed with the bat to lead the Durban side to the top of the table.

The 30-year-old, leading his franchise for the first time this season, played the last of his four ODIs 18 months ago and he admits that he is enjoying his current spate of form.

The Dolphins currently lead the domestic 50-over standings by a massive nine points from the Lions, who have two games in hand.

They face the defending champion Titans at Kingsmead on Thursday and will be hoping to improve on their fourth-place, although they too have games in hand.

Aiden Markram is set to return from a lengthy injury lay-off in the game.

Maharaj insists the Dolphins are not feeling any pressure ahead of the game and instead focus on what they need to do to beat the Tshwane-based visitors.

Victory in Thursday’s game, which Maharaj will play before linking up with the national team, will almost certainly seal the Dolphins’ place in the last four.

However, those permutations are not something the captain or his team is looking at. He says the focus remains one game at a time for Imraan Khan’s team. Report by Thahir Asmal
