Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma has described the AmaZulu King, Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu, as someone who spoke his mind and had a great sense of humour.

The Minister was speaking as preparations continue in Nongoma in northern KwaZulu-Natal for the “planting” or laying to rest of the King.

He had succumbed to COVID-19 at a Durban hospital.

The private “planting” ceremony will take place on Wednesday evening and last into Thursday morning.

King Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu to be laid to rest in a men-only private funeral:

A public memorial service is expected to take place on Thursday.

Dlamini-Zuma says the King had deep knowledge and experience.

“Almost 50 years of experience as a King and nobody else in his country has that kind of experience, not even on the continent. It is not going to be a gap anyone can fill. The lessons that he’s taught us we must take forward. That we were able to drink from that reservoir of knowledge,” says Dlamini-Zuma.

In the video below, Minister Dlamini-Zuma pays tribute to the King:

The Zulu Royal Family has thanked South Africans for their messages of condolence sent after the passing of the King.

The family says the institution of traditional leadership has been a pillar of strength during this time.

They also say they are indebted to the leaders of all political parties for their support during this difficult period.

The family has expressed appreciation for President Cyril Ramaphosa’s declaration that the King would be accorded a Special Official Funeral, Category One.
