Disaster management teams activated in North West as heavy rains continue across SA

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Disaster Management teams have been activated across the North West Province to respond to any eventualities.

This is as heavy rainfalls continue throughout the country.

More than a hundred houses have been destroyed at Lebotloane village in the Moretele local municipality, Bloemhof in the Lekwa Teemane municipality, and Monnakato village in Moses Kotane.

Around Mahikeng, several houses were also flooded, reportedly because of the poor drainage systems.

Authorities say the South African Weather Services, has also warned of more rainfall. They have also urged communities to take precautionary measures during these rainy seasons

SABC News’s Meteorologist Kumsa Masizana talks about whether in December 2021 in SA.

It was a difficult weekend for most residents across the North West province. In Mahikeng some houses were flooded. One of the affected residents, Selogilwe Sebolao, says this happened despite having reported and asked for assistance from the local municipality.

“It started flooding after the road was constructed. My house also gets flooded. I have informed the previous councillor but nothing was done,”  says Sebolao.

Funerals and other services were also not spared. Residents have been left frustrated, for not getting the help they needed.

“We have a funeral service, but the yard is flooded,” says another resident.

District Disaster Management Centre

Spokesperson for Mahikeng Local Municipality, Johny Nkoane says residents must contact their local councillors for assistance.

“Inform the ward councillor, so that the ward councillor can inform the relevant people from the Disaster management. Secondly is to call the District Disaster Management Centre on 0800 066 636,” says Nkoane.

Intervention measures

Meanwhile, houses have been damaged in areas such as Lebotloane, Monnakato and Bloemhof, but authorities say intervention measures are being rolled out.

MEC for Human Settlement Lenah Miga says the District Disaster Management teams should be ready to offer shelter to those who may need it.

“What we’re calling for, is that our District Disaster Management teams must be ready to respond. They must be able to provide some sort of shelter, a temporary shelter for the families that might need that so that we don’t leave our people outside. But we must also indicate that we appreciate the fact that Eskom has been on the ground since the time of the disaster,” says Miga.
