Disaster Risk measures in place as wet weather conditions hit Cape Town

Disaster Risk Management in the City of Cape Town expects increased flooding in newly-established informal settlements that have been created on unsuitable and flood prone land.

A cold front has been lashing the Western Cape since Thursday resulting in heavy rain and wind. Spokesperson for Disaster Risk Management Charlotte Powell says flooding has been reported in Gugululethu, Macassar village and Philippi East areas.

She says there have been reports of power outages and various roads have been flooded.

“Disaster Risk Management centre will conduct assessments and will active SASSA to provide soft relief if required weather related power outages have been reported in Joe Slovo and in Noordhoek . Various roads across the city were flooded due to blocked drains , these are being attended to by the roads and storm water department.”
