Deputy Minister in the Presidency and African National Congress (ANC) NEC member, Professor Hlengiwe Mkhize, has passed away.
The 69-year-old Deputy Minister responsible for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities died on Thursday morning, but details around her passing are not yet clear.
She was appointed to the portfolio in 2019 by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Professor Mkhize was also the Chairperson of the Andrew and June Mlangeni Foundation.
In March, Mkhize urged government to minimise the emotional and physical strain of South Africa’s already struggling youth.
Below are some of the messages of condolence from social media users.

How I had hoped and hoped that one day Prof Hlengiwe Mkhize would leave politics and join Academia on full time basis. You couldn’t convice her otherwise. She loved the back stabbing ANC. RIP Mom Hlengiwe💔💔💔 pic.twitter.com/BEAwbNdzuQ
