The Deputy Minister of Basic Education Reginah Mhaule says her department is working hard to ensure that all schools are crime-free.

Mhaule and the MEC for Education in Mpumalanga, Bonakele Majuba visited Moduping Secondary School in Marite to monitor the school’s reopening.

Moduping School is among the schools that were attacked by criminals last year.

Last year, teachers in the area downed tools and staged a protest after teachers and pupils in several schools were robbed of their belongings, including cell phones, tablet computers and money.

Deputy Minister Mhaule says they are also concerned with vandalism in schools.

“In this place, even the police officers don’t sleep, even when they call for prayer. The officers call for prayer to come help us. The crime rate is high. The trucks, when they pass, they get redirected, robbed, and the drivers are killed. That’s why we said we needed to focus on this. We just spoke with the MEC and said that we need to have the community imbizo because if we get right to the community, then it will be right in the school. All the social ills they come from the communities, then they come to school.”
