Department of Health administers 220 000 vaccines in a day

The country has administered more than 220 000 vaccines in one day. This is the first time the 200 000 mark has been exceeded in a day since the vaccination drive began in South Africa.

Over 5.3 million vaccinations have been administered, while almost 1.8 million people have been fully vaccinated.

More than 1.5 million South Africans between the ages of 35 and 49 have already registered for their COVID-19 vaccination. The Department of Health says that more than a million people registered on Thursday last week alone.

Meanwhile, National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) has reported 7 209 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 2 302 304.

This increase represents a 27.3% positivity rate. The death toll now sits at 67 080 after a further 221 COVID-19 related deaths were reported in the last 24 hours.

Gauteng has registered 2 617 new coronavirus cases, followed by the Western Cape with 1 234 cases.
