Deeply concerned about the implications of the conflict in Ukraine – Pres Ramaphosa

Reading Time: 2 minutes

President Cyril Ramaphosa says he’s deeply concerned about the implications of the conflict in Ukraine.

He says the Ukraine-Russia conflict does not bode well for global economic recovery.

Ramaphosa addressed the country’s ambassadors in Pretoria deployed across the world.

The President says the conflict has disrupted global supply chains.

He also appealed to the ambassadors to drive South Africa’s plan to reignite its economy.

An important occasion to recalibrate South Africa’s foreign policy with the heads of diplomatic missions deployed in a number of capitals.

President Ramaphosa says the conflict in Ukraine has had an extraordinary impact on global affairs and these events will define international relations into the future.

He says Pretoria will always be guided by the United Nations charter in resolving conflicts: “The conflict has exposed the inability of the United Nations Security Council to fulfill its mandate of maintaining international peace and security. The current formation of the United Nations Security Council is outdated and unrepresentative, it disadvantages countries with developing economies. The entire peace and security architecture of the United Nations needs to be overhauled. Decision making needs to be democratized so that the Council can be true to its mandate and move beyond the paralysis.”
