Debate around Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and the TRC remembered

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The discovery of the remains of what is suspected to be Lolo Sono and Sibonsiso Tshabalala has scratched open old wounds, dating back to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), and it’s hearings around Winnie Madikizela-Mandela. Madikizela-Mandela was linked to the deaths of the two men. What is believe to be the two men’s remains were found in the Avalon cemetery in Soweto recently. It was said at the TRC that Madikizela-Mandela was one of the last people to see them alive and had a hand in their deaths. Madikizela-Mandela’s lawyer, Pops Templeton Mageza denied that his client was responsible for their deaths and pointed out that the final TRC document found that Jerry Richardson was responsible for their deaths. Madikizela-Mandela‘s name and the TRC goes a long way back though. From the death of Stompie Seipei, to the notorious Mandela United Football Club, Madikizela-Mandela’s name was known to all who followed the TRC proceedings. Names like Dr Abu Baker Asvat became associated with her.
