The Department of Home Affairs has extended the deadline for the submission of documents and biometrics for the Zimbabwean Exemption Permit (ZEP) until 31 January 2018.

The new permits will replace the current Zimbabwe Special Permit which expires at the end of 2017.

Zimbabwean nationals with valid permits will be allowed to do business, work, and study in South Africa.

Home Affairs says it’s pleased with the response to its new Zimbabwe Exemption Permit ” ZEP”.

To date, nearly 170 000 online applications have been submitted.

Mkhuseli Apleni Home Affairs DG says, “Due to the large number of ZSP permit-holders who have completed the online application thus far, the department has extended the closing date for the submission of supporting documents and biometrics to 31 January. Therefore, people must present themselves to the VFS office until this date- 31 January.”

Unlike previous permits the new ZEP will be valid for four years starting in January 2018 till December 2021.

Apleni says he has a good working relationship with the new Home Affairs Minister Ayanda Dlodlo at his first media briefing since his suspension was overturned by the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria.

Apleni says, “I’m back in the department. I’m happy and we are happy as a department, including the ministers. What we are focusing on is to really deliver services to the people of this country.”

Apleni was unlawfully suspended by the previous Home Affairs Minister Hlengiwe Mkhize who has since been reshuffled to Higher Education.

The ZEP project is expected to be completed by September 2018.
