Deadline looms for renewal of expired licences during hard lockdown

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Road Traffic Management Corporation has warned motorists that the deadline for the renewal of licences which expired between 26 March to 31 December 2020 is fast approaching.

The national lockdown imposed on the country last year forced licensing centres to close, resulting in a backlog of expired licences.

Minister of Transport then announced an extension for all learner licences, driving licence cards, temporary driving licences and professional driving licences until the end of August this year.

Spokesperson for the RTMC, Simon Zwane, admitted that the lines are long at licensing centres due to the last-minute surge but urged motorists to persevere.

“They must just make the necessary arrangements to renew. There’s nothing in the legislation that prevents you from renewing outside of the districts where you live. If you find a space outside the district where you live, make use of that opportunity so that you are compliant,” says  Zwane.
