Deadline for public objections to candidates lists looms

Reading Time: < 1 minute

South Africa’s voting public has until five o’clock this afternoon to object to candidates on political parties’ lists for the 2014 general elections.

Twenty-nine political parties have successfully registered with the Independent Electoral Commission to participate in the elections.

Their candidate lists have been published.

Deputy Chief Electoral Officer, Sy Mamabolo says the constitution allows citizens to launch objections with the IEC about any candidate.

“Today by five o’clock is the cut-off time for the objections to candidates. So any person who in terms of the Constitution and Section 30 of the Electoral Act has any qualms against any candidate may do so, may lodge an objection to the Constitution by 5pm.”

Meanwhile, Limpopo Electoral Officer, Nkaro Mateta says more than 4 000 officers will be deployed in the province during this year’s National and Provincial elections. There are more than3 000 voting stations in the province.

Mateta says senior electoral officers are being trained, saying the IEC is also in the process of recruiting field workers.
