De Lille joins contractors to find new water sources in W Cape

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille has joined city contractors who are conducting aerial surveys of aquifers around the Cape Flats.

The survey is part of efforts to identify new water sources and ensure a constant water supply to households and business in light of the on-going drought.

Mayoral Spokesperson, Zara Nicholson says the method does not pose a danger to residents and it does not involve any digging.

“These airborne surveys will be conducted using a helicopter that has a measuring device in the shape of a wagon-wheel attached underneath it. The city has taken a cautious approach to the extraction of underground water from Aquifers to ensure that the process is both environmentally and ecologically sensitive. The city will be tapping into the Atlantis Silverton Aquifer, the Cape Flats Aquifer, and Table Mountain Aquifer to supplement the surface water supply,” says Nicholson.
