De Lille irritated by allegations of corruption against her

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Cape Town Mayor Patricia De Lille has described the allegations of corruption against her as an irritation. De Lille is being investigated by the Democratic Alliance (DA) following allegations of irregular renovations to her private home, allegedly paid for by the city.

She says the report implicating her in apparent irregular expenditure and mismanagement in the City of Cape Town is factually incorrect and needs to be amended.

De Lille has provided the DA with representations as to why she should not resign as Mayor of the City. She was barred from all party activities after a sub-committee of the party’s federal executive found concerns around issues of management and governance in the city.

De Lille is also accused of planning to discredit a senior manager who questioned alleged tender irregularities. She says she is not distracted by the allegations as she is fully focused on the water crisis.

“I’m certainly not distracted. I’ve got a responsibility first and foremost to the people of the City of Cape Town. That is what I’m getting paid to do. Yes, some of the issues are of irritation value, but I’m not distracted at all. I’m committed to making sure that this well-run city does not run out of water, and that consumes the bigger part of my day every day.”
