De Lille consulting lawyers against claims

Reading Time: 2 minutes

City of Cape Town Mayor Patricia De Lille says she’s consulting with lawyers after claims that she had instructed a senior official to make a report into alleged tender irregularities “go away”.

The allegations were reportedly made by Executive Director in De Lille’s office, Craig Kesson.

The council has resolved that an independent investigator be appointed to probe the claims and allegations of mismanagement against two other senior officials.

It’s the city that constantly boasts about clean audit reports.  But recent allegations paint a different picture.
This as turmoil and infighting within the City of Cape Town come to light.

Dirk Smit the City Of Cape Town speaker says, “Achmat Ebrahim, the commissioner of Transport Development Authority, Mrs Melissa Whitehead and the executive director of the office of the mayor Mr Craig Kesson will be given seven days’ notice to provide written representations to council on why they should not be placed on precautionary suspension.”

It’s claimed De Lille asked that a report into a R43 million loss regarding another tender be made to go away.

In a statement, she says she’s not been given an opportunity to respond and wants her lawyers to go through the 42 page document.

Cosatu’s Western Cape Regional Secretary Tony Ehrenreich says, “The mismanagement is being exposed in the City of Cape Town by the battles in the DA.We have seen the water crisis that is leading us to a disaster in poor communities and now we’ve seen corruption being exposed at a grand scale in the City of Cape Town. These were matters that were hidden from the auditor general’s report and now clearly its coming out as the different factions are exposing each other.”

De Lille is expected to respond to the affidavit by the end of this week.
