University of the Western Cape Political Analyst, Keith Gottschalk says Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille automatically loses her position now that the Democratic Alliance (DA) has rescinded her party membership.

The DA’s Federal Executive Council revoked De Lille’s membership on Tuesday morning, saying she had gone on a public platform and signalled her intention to resign.

Gottschalk says the party was trying to figure out a way to let her go without her being able to challenge its decision in court.

He says, “Once you’ve ceased to be a member of your political party, you are no longer a ward councillor, if you were elected on proportional representation… so you automatically are removed as a Mayor. If De Lille is representing a ward, of course she would remain a ward councillor. If she’s not a party member any longer, it means the DA does not need to recall her because she’s automatically lost any positions.”
