De Beers mine probe miner’s death

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The General Manager of De Beers’ Venetia diamond mine outside Alldays in Limpopo, Gerrie Nortje says workers are receiving counseling following a fatal incident on Sunday.

Thirty-one-year-old Dimakatso Semata was allegedly dragged by a conveyer belt and died.

Operations remain suspended pending investigations by both the mine and the department of Mineral Resources.

Nortje says the investigation will be intensive.

“We are extremely concerned about our employees and the family. The mine has not had a fatality in 10 years, and can’t say every rule and procedure was followed and obviously, the investigation will focus on that. We will take our entire workforce through training and revisit some of training models. Obviously we offer employee assistance program to assist some employees struggling to cope after the loss of a colleague so the process for us to conclude before we will get into production, will take us a number of days.”
