Mmusi Maimane says residents need to adhere to usage of 50 litres of water per person per day ahead of the usually rainy winter season.

Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane says Day Zero can be avoided in 2018 if Cape Town residents continue to save water. He was addressing a media briefing in the city.

Maimane says residents need to adhere to usage of 50 litres of water per person per day ahead of the usually rainy winter season.

Marketing agency WESGRO said on Tuesday that the City of Cape Town had reduced its water consumption by 60% over the past three years.

The agency said consumers currently use about 500 million litres of water daily, compared to 1,2 billion litres three years ago.
