Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies will meet next week with local steel companies affected by the higher import tariffs imposed by the United States.

Speaking on the side-lines of the Japan-Africa Public Private Economic Forum, Davies has expressed confidence that not all jobs in the affected companies will be lost.

Davies says the meeting will include labour unions and nine local steel manufacturers that export to the US…

“We will have to discuss amelioration strategies, I don’t think it’s a foregone conclusion that jobs in all the firms exporting steel to the US will be lost it will require adoption. We will continue talking to the US…our priority now is to endure that the 6000 odd jobs are not lost.”

Meanwhile President Cyril Ramaphosa delivered the keynote address at the Japan-Africa Public Private Economic Forum in Johannesburg on Thursday.

High-powered delegates from the world’s third-largest economy are attending the event, aimed primarily at promoting private sector-led economic growth and encouraging networking among African and Japanese companies.
