DA’s vote of no confidence in Makhura defeated

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Democratic Aliiance’s motion of no-confidence in Gauteng Premier David Makhura has been defeated in the provincial legislature in Johannesburg. Out of the 65 legislature members who voted, 27 voted Yes for the motion and 38 voted against it.

Six members of the legislature were absent from the house and one member abstained.

The motion was tabled by the DA. They wanted Makhura removed as premier saying the deaths of the 144 Esidimeni mental health patients happened under his watch.

The DA has indicated they would lay criminal charges against Makhura.

As the legislature debated the vote of no confidence, Gauteng Health MEC Gwen Ramokgopa has lashed out at the Democratic Alliance (DA) saying they are using the Esidimeni tragedy for cheap political gains.

Ramokgopa says this shows a lack of respect for the families of the deceased.

“The plight of the families not to use the tragedy for cheap political gain is falling on deaf ears of the DA as they constantly pursue a narrow political agenda out of this tragic event. They want to govern Gauteng at all costs even at the cost of disrespecting the wishes of the affected families. We will not participate in that process.”
