Democratic Alliance (DA) supporters in Johannesburg have turned out in force for a march to the City Council ahead of the debate on the motion of no confidence against Mayor Herman Mashaba and council speaker Vasco Da Gama on Thursday morning.

The #HandsOffMashaba march is proceeding from Parktown to the council building. The DA says the motion of no confidence is a ploy by the African National Congress (ANC) to regain control of Johannesburg and reverse what the DA-led administration has accomplished since taking power last year.

Hundreds of DA members and supporters have painted the streets of Johannesburg blue, as they make their way to the City Council ahead of the debate on the motion of no confidence.

Dozens of buses transported the supporters to  Pieter Roos Park on Empire Road, where they began their March. Everyone was in a jovial mood as they chanted struggle songs,  holding up placards reading ‘Hands of Mashaba’.

A large police contingent has been deployed to ensure the march goes on as planned.
