The Democratic Alliance’s (DA) Solly Malatsi and Makashule Gana have announced that they will run 500 km from Soweto to Tzaneen from July 24 to 8 August to raise funds for uniforms and pads for poor children.

The duo hopes to raise R500 000 – R1000 a kilometre, with the campaign they call the Home Run.

They have urged people to support the initiative and will be providing details on their social media pages as to how this can be done.

“Those young girls who are at school who often miss large numbers of school days during the menstruation cycle can remain at school. As men I think it is important to be part of the solution when it comes to conversations like this and to try and find solutions on issues that affect young women, in order for them to study without any obstacle in their way and that is why we decided to do this,” explains Malatsi.

The announcement of “an important” briefing on Monday night, triggered widespread speculation on social media over the event’s content following the recent resignation of DA heavyweight, Phumzile van Damme, from Parliament.

SABC News’ Nathasha Phiri touches on the speculations:
