Epidemiologist Jo Barnes has reiterated the warning that despite noting a decrease in the number of new daily coronavirus cases, the health sector’s records do not display the true number of infected people in South Africa.

This after President Cyril Ramaphosa moved the country to Alert Level 3 of the national lockdown.

Under adjust Level 3 the sale of alcohol is being allowed for offsite consumption from Monday to Thursday.

Dr Barnes says the public still needs to be aware of the highly infectious Delta variant of the coronavirus that is spreading rapidly across South Africa.

“The latest easing is very cautious. There are officially 150 000 active cases. But remember that depends on how many people get tested. A number of people would also have the disease but would not have the ability to show symptoms. I am still concerned that people think that the numbers are dropping that the crisis is now over the worst and it will be going away. Nothing is further from the truth,” says Barnes.
