DA wants investigation into Kimberley festival funding

The Democratic Alliance(DA) in the Northern Cape wants the Public Protector to investigate the alleged abuse of State funds, deposited into the annual Diamonds and Dorings Festival in Kimberley.

The party says the Northern Cape Department of Economic Development and Tourism and the Sol Plaatje municipality deposited R2.6 million to Macronymn 37CC, the company that hosts the event.

The DA’s Boitumelo Babuseng says the provincial government must account for these funds.

“Our concern is that the public resources that get channeled into this event in the form of financial support is money that is not accounted for and it’s public money. So, basically we are asking the public protector to investigate the money that goes into this event and that money is not being accounted for.”
