DA threatens to lay criminal charges against Makhura

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has threatened to lay criminal charges against Gauteng Premier David Makhura should their motion of no-confidence against him fail.

The party will table a motion of no-confidence against Makhura during the sitting of the Gauteng legislature in Johannesburg on Tuesday.

This is in connection with the deaths of 144 mental health patients after they were transferred to unlicensed and ill-equipped NGO’s.

The motion is likely to fail with the DA having only 23 seats while the African National Congress has 40 seats. Even if the DA were to convince all opposition parties to vote with them they will only manage 33 votes.

DA Gauteng leader John Moodey says they will hold Makhura accountable. “I’d also like to believe ANC members will vote with their conscious and if that happens we will be successful in removing Makhura if it doesn’t happen we will follow through on other actions we are already investigating such as laying criminal charges against the premier. We will leave no stone un turned in holding David Makhura and his government to account.”
