DA pulls out all the stops in quest to hang onto Midvaal

Reading Time: 3 minutes

The DA is pulling out all the stops in its quest to hang onto Midvaal – the only municipality it governs in Gauteng. Councillor Peter Teixeira is its mayoral candidate for Midvaal.

The event held at Sicelo township in Meyerton was attended by DA national leader, John Steenhuisen and his Gauteng counterpart, Solly Msimanga.

Midvaal is ranked the best performing municipality in the country and has had clean audit outcomes for seven consecutive years.

The Sicelo community hall was a frenzy, with DA supporters screaming and shouting as Midvaal mayoral candidate, Peter Teixeira ascended the stage.

DA leader, John Steenhuisen says Teixeira ticks all the right boxes.

“Born and raised right here in Midvaal, he has strong ties to the community. He joined the DA in 2014, and has impressed everybody with his impressive work ethic. And he has risen through the ranks. From being elected ward councillor, he was soon on the mayoral committee and served as MMC in three portfolios. Peter Teixeira is also our constituency head here in Midvaal constituency.”

Teixeira wants to tackle crime and lawlessness, improve services to communities, stop illegal land invasion, and investigate ways of procuring energy from independent power producers to reduce reliance on Eskom. He says clean audit outcomes the Midvaal obtained for the past seven years, while commendable, are however meaningless if they are not backed by improved and reliable service delivery.

“Democrats, clean audits have no meaning if the people of Midvaal cannot see, touch, feel and experience the DA deference of clean governance and responsive leadership. So, our residents must open their taps and receive clean water. They must drive out of their homes on smooth curbs and pothole-free. On a weekly basis and I mean Beke le Beke, Viki ne Viki, their refuse must be collected from their homes even on public holidays.”

Gauteng DA leader, Solly Msimanga took a swipe at the ANC-run municipalities neighbouring Midvaal, including Emfuleni and Sedibeng.

“We are not perfect but drive down the road to the next municipality – Emfuleni – you are lucky to walk on dry ground not because it is raining but because there is sewer all over. You are lucky to walk in a space that is flat because every other space has potholes in it. You are lucky to have a municipal vehicle driving down the road because all the municipal vehicles are now somewhere either impounded or waiting somewhere needing to be fixed.”

Steenhuisen urged voters to give the DA another five years to run Midvaal – and continue its excellent service delivery track record.

“Now is not the time to pick parties on the basis that they might look like you and speak your language. Now is not the time to splinter the opposition into a dozen smaller fragments. Now is not the time to pick a single micro issue and vote for a party that only cares for one issue because none of those things will save your town and municipality from total collapse.”

He thanked Bongani Baloyi noting that what he achieved in Midvaal was nothing short of outstanding.
