DA, PA negotiations to save Trollip deadlocked

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Negotiations have deadlocked between the Democratic Alliance and the Patriotic Alliance (PA) in a bid to save the Nelson Mandela Metro’s Mayor, Athol Trollip, from being ousted.

The two parties had marathon discussions in Port Elizabeth until the early hours of Tuesday morning. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has tabled a motion of no confidence in Trollip, to be debated on Thursday.

For the motion to be successful, the EFF needs the support of other parties in the Metro Council, including the PA. The PA wants the position of the Deputy Mayor, which has been scrapped, and the Safety and Security portfolio.

“It’s unfortunate that the PA is not in a position to say which corner it would end up, currently we are standing right in the centre but I trust that the black caucus and either the DA will come and put up something on the table that will please Patriotic Alliance and that can only be in line with service delivery that would be of benefit to the residents of the Northern areas of the Nelson Mandela Bay,” says Patriotic Alliance Chairperson Marlon Daniels.
