DA now supports fracking

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Democratic Alliance (DA) today changed its position on hydraulic fraction, supporting the controversial technology.
After extensive debate, a proposed resolution to not support fracking was overturned by the house at the DA’s 5th Federal Congress, with a note that the party supports it under a number of conditions. These conditions include that government initiate a strategic environmental assessment in the Karoo and adheres to legislation governing fracking.
The decision by representatives at the DA’s Congress places the party in a conflicted position as its national assembly caucus has already taken a position opposed to fracking. The party resolved for discussions to take place with the parliamentary caucus to align their position with the new one as a whole.
