Karlsen says gender parity should also consider demographics and experience.

Democratic Alliance (DA) Member of Parliament Phumzile Karlsen says while it is worrying to see the smaller percentage of women who are coming to parliament, she is happy her party has a diverse composition.

Parliament’s 400 MPs will be sworn-in this week. Karlsen says gender parity should also consider demographics and experience.

Karlsen said: “We made sure that there was diversity in our agenda as I said also age, experience for example we have our many young MPs coming through who are very, very impressive…”

“So for us, diversity is not only about gender, it also includes your age, experience and I think we got a good balance of MPs who represents South Africa and all its different types of diversity,” she added.

The DA will be sending 84 MPs to parliament down from the 89 of the previous administration.
