DA on a mission to ensure Zuma pays legal fees

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane says the party has begun legal proceedings  to ensure former President Jacob Zuma pays back over R15 million in legal fees.

They relate to 783 corruption, racketeering and money-laundering charges.

The Supreme Court of Appeal last year refused Zuma and the National Prosecuting Authority leave to appeal a High Court ruling, which set aside a 2009 decision to drop the charges related to the arms deal.

Maimane says a ‘secret deal’ was struck between Zuma and former President Thabo Mbeki to pay his legal costs.

According to Maimane, Zuma chose the most expensive counsel using taxpayers’ money.

“R15 million is an extraordinary amount of money. It should be used for the purposes of advancing the freedom of SA. Why should this same amount of money be used to protect one man who is, as I describe it, a delinquent litigate. Our case outlines the following; we have written a letter to the presidency to require clarity on a number of issues. On what basis does his office claim that the payments made in the presidency in respect of Zuma’s legal fees are in line with the legislation and specifically the State Attorney Act 56 of 1957?”
