DA manifesto to focus on job creation, economy

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Democratic Alliance (DA) will on Sunday launch its election manifesto in which it will seek to drum up support in a precarious economic situation.

South Africa is grappling with high unemployment rate, inflation breaching the upper target band of the Reserve Bank with most consumers being highly indebted.

The party promises to grow the economy by 8%, create 6 million permanent jobs and halve unemployment within the next 10 years.
But, Conrad Bezuidenhout from Manufacturing Circle says this sounds like pie in the sky.

Bezuidenhout says, “The gaping holes in the policy, is that there is no credible economist that will back you up when you say no matter what plans we will grow the economy by 8% and create 6 million jobs.”

He adds: “The DA policy, though very positive, doesn’t take into account that you need to grow demand conditions, you need to grow market access, you need to grow domestic market demand for manufactured and other goods and also the policy does not really focus a lot on the productive sector of the economy.”

SABC News Online will be live streaming the DA election manifesto launch from 12pm. The stream will be on the SABC News Wesbsite (www.sabc.co.za/news) as well as its You Tube channel (www.youtube.com/sabcnews).
